Director of Addiction Medicine, Damian Family Care Centers

Dr. Sonia Lopez is Board Certified in Addiction Medicine and has worked in the addiction field for more than 30 years. She has significant experience in using Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to treat opioid use disorders (OUD).

After graduating from medical school at SUNY Stony Brook, Dr. Lopez completed her residency in Family Medicine at Montefiore Hospital in the Residency Program for Social Medicine. She has been with Damian Family Care Centers (a Federally Qualified Health Center) since 2016, where she is the Director of Addiction Medicine.

Dr. Lopez has worked in all phases of addiction medicine treatment: drug-free outpatient, inpatient detox, residential treatment, opioid treatment programs, and now is working in an Office-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) setting at Damian. She has served on the board of the Coalition of Medication-Assisted Treatment Program Providers and Advocates since 2013. She also serves on the Municipal Drug Strategy Council in New York City.

She is very interested in training primary care providers to prescribe MATs, and she is committed to making medications and treatment more accessible for ALL people who need them. Dr. Lopez is also a certified acupuncturist and has worked with people with medical problems and addiction problems, using acupuncture and other holistic approaches.
