On November 2nd, Team Odyssey hit the streets of New York City with determination, pride, and purpose. Under the leadership of  Director of Recreational Services Andre Matthews, 52 clients, alumni, staff, and charity runners took on the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon, one of the world’s most demanding races.

For the men and women in our recovery programs, running isn’t just exercise — it’s a reflection of the daily discipline and resilience that recovery requires. The same qualities that help them push through 26.2 miles — focus, consistency, and inner strength — are the ones that help them stay on course in life.

“Addiction is a disease, not only physically, but it also kills your spirit, and accomplishment is a great remedy,” said John Tavolacci, EVP, Chief Operating Officer. “We’re transforming people’s lives through running and clinical work.”

This year marked Odyssey House’s fifth year as an official TCS New York City Marathon Charity Partner, a milestone that reflects how deeply running has become part of our community and mission. Our charity runners came from across the country to fundraise for the Odyssey Foundation, raising more than $80,000 to support the men, women, and families in our care.

Male marathoner biting his medal in NYCAmong them was Jason, who traveled from Texas to run his ninth marathon. After losing his father to a heart attack at 55, Jason realized he needed to make a change. Two years later, at 270 pounds, he ran his first mile — and has since lost more than 100 pounds. For him, running has been nothing short of life-changing.

Each Team Odyssey runner brought a story of perseverance — from clients in early recovery to alumni returning to give back. Together, they showed what’s possible when a community rallies behind hope and healing.

“The skills it takes to complete a marathon — focus, persistence, resilience — are the same ones that build a strong recovery,” said Andre.

As the final runners crossed the finish line in Central Park, the sense of accomplishment was unmistakable. Team Odyssey didn’t just conquer the marathon course — they celebrated recovery in motion.

Congratulations to all our runners and supporters for making this year’s marathon another unforgettable chapter in the Run for Your Life story!
