Contingency Management is an evidence-based intervention that helps to reinforce positive treatment behaviors.

At Odyssey House, Contingency Management is integrated into a comprehensive recovery model that prioritizes empowerment, motivation, and long-term success.

The Methodology

This practice is implemented through draws of pieces of paper from a bowl to award prizes (or incentives) for abstinence and treatment compliance. As treatment compliance is sustained, the opportunity to increase the number of draws from the bowl increases, leading to a cumulative reinforcing effect on the client.

Rooted in Science

Rooted in behavioral psychology, Contingency Management works by leveraging positive reinforcement to encourage individuals to make healthier choices. By providing tangible rewards for meeting treatment goals—such as attending counseling sessions, maintaining sobriety, or engaging in supportive services—participants develop a greater sense of motivation and accomplishment.

Backed by Research

Research has consistently shown that Contingency Management is particularly effective for treating substance use disorders, as there are currently no FDA-approved medications for stimulant addiction. By rewarding abstinence with incentives, individuals experience a structured, encouraging approach to recovery, which can help them sustain long-term behavioral change.

By reinforcing positive behaviors, this approach helps individuals break free from substance use, fostering stability, self-efficacy, and hope for a healthier future.
